About the Author

Born Juan de Yepes y Álvarez in Fontiveros, Spain, St. John of the Cross (1542-1591) was a Carmelite friar, a poet, a mystic, and one of the most influential voices in the Christian contemplative tradition. His major works include The Dark Night, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Spiritual Canticle, and The Living Flame of Love. These writings explore the soul's journey toward union with God through the purification of desire, the stripping away of attachments, and the gradual transformation of the inner life by divine love. John of the Cross died in 1591 and was canonized in 1726. In 1926, he was declared a Doctor of the Church, recognizing the enduring theological and spiritual significance of his work.
