Leo Pinsker and Theodor Herzl, the visionaries behind the words compiled in this volume, brought about a remarkable intellectual and practical revolution by transforming what until the 19th century had been a religious yearning, crystallized in a formula of hope, into an outstanding political imprint: the coming year in Jerusalem. A mark that led them to transcend Judaism, giving it a universal significance. The establishment of their own State meant, in effect, not only emancipating the Jewish people from the Gentiles who dominated them, but, and this is much more decisive, from God himself, who humiliated them through those same Gentiles and from the messianic hope of the second coming of the Messiah, who chained them by means of hope to wait. Once created, this State would free it from all yoke and elevate it to a finally "chosen" people. Zionism, the theoretical-practical movement created by Hess, Pinsker and Herzl, in fact substituted hope for action and God for man: it was, in short, the Jew himself who had to create the means that would liberate him and dignify him as a man on earth.

About the Author

Leo Pinsker, (1821 -1891), fue un médico y activista judío cuya obra dejó una huella en la historia del sionismo. A lo largo de su vida experimentó los estragos del antisemitismo, lo que lo llevó a desarrollar ideas visionarias sobre el destino del pueblo judío. Su obra más destacada, «Autoemancipación» (1882), reflexionaba sobre la condición judía en Europa y abogaba por la creación de un estado independiente para los judíos, en tanto que la asimilación no resolvía los problemas del antisemitismo. Por ello defendía la autoemancipación y el retorno a la tierra ancestral. Aunque no vivió para ver la fundación del Estado de Israel, su visión sentó las bases para el movimiento sionista. Theodor Herzl (1860 - 1904), húngaro de nacimiento, judío por religión y germano por parte de madre, fue un judío aculturado con poca relación con las prácticas religiosas. Se erigió como figura clave en la historia del sionismo y la creación del Estado de Israel, desafiando convenciones hasta convertirse en un ferviente defensor de la idea de un hogar nacional judío. Periodista y abogado de formación, en su obra «El Estado Judío» (1896), abogaba por su creación para garantizar la seguridad y el futuro del su pueblo. Este llamamiento marcó el inicio del movimiento sionista moderno. Dedicó gran parte de su vida a promover la cusa sionista buscando el respaldo internacional. Trágicamente, Herzl falleció sin presenciar la materialización de su visión. Sin embargo, su legado perdura, y su contribución al establecimiento de Israel sigue siendo fundamental.
