Book Synopsis

Build Bridges Through Courage, Curiosity, and Compassion

In a world fractured by division and isolation, The Way of Befriending offers a transformative vision of connection. Parfait Bassalé, a belonging strategist, singer-songwriter, and storyteller shows how we can dismantle barriers of race, religion, and identity, healing relationships and communities by befriending others through:

  • Courage to confront fears and biases.
  • Curiosity to initiate, ask, listen, and learn.
  • Compassion to care deeply and walk alongside others.

Blending deeply personal stories, practical tools, and original songs, Bassalé redefines friendship as a countercultural antidote to "othering" and a pathway to liberation. His unique approach interweaves reflective inquiry with original music, creating an immersive guide for fostering authentic relationships that heal and inspire.

In The Way of Befriending, you'll find:

  • Personal storytelling, reflections, and practical insights that cast a new vision for empathy.
  • Reflective prompts and practical tools for befriending in teams, organizations, and faith communities.
  • A multimedia experience including original music and lyrics by the author.

Whether you're seeking to deepen personal connections, lead with empathy, or create inclusive communities, this book is an invitation to see the humanity in others and take the bold step of being a bridge. If you're ready to embrace a more compassionate and connected world, with The Way of Befriending you'll find that the road to your own belonging is through befriending.

Systems change when hearts change. Hearts change when we dare to be a friend.

Review Quotes

"At a time when our world, our country, and even our churches feel more divided than ever, Parfait Bassalé offers a simple but revolutionary solution: friendship. With clear examples from his own lived experience, faith, and art, Bassalé's The Way of Befriending is a timely, challenging, and hopeful resource for those seeking to transcend the polarization that plagues us."

--Matthew Soerens, vice president of advocacy and policy at World Relief and coauthor, with Jenny Yang, ofWelcoming the Stranger

"In a world that feels more divided every day, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless to create change. In The Way of Befriending, Parfait Bassalé offers a refreshing antidote: a heartfelt blend of personal stories, original songs, and simple, actionable steps that anyone can embrace. This book inspires hope and equips readers with the tools to break down barriers and build stronger, more cohesive communities."

--Michaela Doelman, chief human resources officer for the state of Washington

"Parfait Bassalé masterfully stitches together the tapestry of our shared humanity, blending storytelling, song lyrics, and actionable wisdom to illuminate pathways toward unity. With warmth and clarity, he reveals the art of befriending--not as a duty but as a profound opportunity. Bassalé reminds us that differences are not walls to divide us but doorways inviting us to connect, appreciate, and build something greater together."

--Jerome Hunter, TED-Ed innovative educator and community advocate

"There cannot be a better time in our modern history to write a book on friendship. Parfait Bassalé takes readers through his personal life experience, faith journey, and trust in God to help us transcend our differences. With practical tools offered by the author, readers will come to realize that 'the Other is just another us with a different story, ' and moreover, that our community is better when we make space for each other to belong. A must-read book!"

--Medard Ngueita, executivedirector of World Relief Western Washington

"This book is a spiritual journey, a collection of modern-day parables guiding us toward the liberating practice of befriending. With honesty and vulnerability, the author shares personal experiences, revealing how choosing friendship can be an antidote to the division we see within ourselves and the world. A powerful reminder that true connection begins with connecting to the divine and that pleasing people will always fall short of fulfilling our true potential. It's a call to confront ourfears, embrace vulnerability, and step into a more authentic and connected life. Importantly, it doesn't just espouse theory; it offers practical, accessible tools that readers at any stage of readiness can begin to use to cultivate befriending in their own lives."

--Casey Layton, chief culture and impact officer at Clackamas Community College
