Description

Black Girl Sunscreen for Kids is an everyday SPF 50 moisturizing sunscreen lotion for the face and body. Our FDA-approved sunscreen protects against harmful UVA/UVB rays and has eliminated all white residue. Soothes, moisturizes, protects, hydrates and heals your child's skin. Water resistant for 80 minutes. No fragrance. No Parabens. No silicones. No aluminum. Oxybenzone and octinoxate free means your child's broad spectrum sunscreen is environmentally friendly.

Our story begins with the need for a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to women of color.

From carrying expensive umbrellas to the beach to avoiding the sunshine altogether, women of color have come up with their own methods of protecting their skin. For years, sunscreen has been tailored to light-skinned individuals, leaving behind a visible white residue on our darker-skinned sisters. Blotchy makeup and white residue were enough to keep people from truly enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Our founder thought it was about time to change that.

In 2016, Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen, a 30 SPF lotion infused with natural ingredients and formulated for women of color. Made with melanated skin in mind, BGS dries completely clear and protects melanin without the white cast.

Today, Black Girl Sunscreen is making moves! Black Girl Sunscreen has grown exponentially because of you. The goal of BGS is to start the conversation globally around sun safety to educate and protect melanin beauties worldwide. Now with four products, we’re saying Black does crack and it’s in our power to protect it.

Q: Can this be used for colored 11-year-olds with oily skin?

submitted by Naula Isa - 6 years ago
  • A: Guys, Naula Isa is a Spanish name. It's also common in South America. These countries never had Jim Crow. The term "colored" is not offensive as it is in America. It just means brown or dark olive complexion. She just wants to know if she can use this on her daughter.

submitted byTruthInAdvertising - 5 years ago
  • A: We are unsure of what "colored 11-year-old" means. However, BGS Kids SPF 50 can be used on melaninated skin ages 6 months and older.

submitted byTeam BGS - 6 years ago
  • A: If you mean POC yes...colored should not be a word used to describe melaninated skin.

submitted byJada - 5 years ago
  • A: Homosalate is a chemical sunscreen and is recommended to be avoided by pregnant women and CHILDREN due to its harmful effects . SMH this has 15% homosalate. Do better.

Q: Does this sunscreen sting the eyes? I have trouble finding a sunscreen that doesn’t sting my eyes

submitted by Cindy - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi Cindy, BGS Kids is not Tear-Free. However, we have not received any feedback indicating that is an issue. Hope this helps!

submitted byTeam BGS - 5 years ago
  • A: I find it does not sting my eyes unlike other water-resistant sunscreens, it stays where you rub it. I avoid my eyelids and bottom lash line.

My favorite sunscreen, absorbs nicely into the skin and doesn’t burn my eyes. I almost stopped buying since seeing the $7 price increase online, but it’s still $9.99 if you shop in store. Just do not buy online!

    Huge Increase

Just last summer in 2025 this product was $9.99. Im shocked at the price increase and a bit disappointed. You can no long get a basic skin care routine (cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen) for under $50. Again, good product bit I will need to find something else due to the increase.

    Best Sunscreen

This is the only sunscreen I can use that doesn't break me out. I was using the original black girl sunscreen, but I kept breaking out with bumps. Someone suggested using the kids version and I haven't had any issues since. Lightweight and no scent. Great price.

    Wonderful!

I absolutely adore this sunscreen. I have mixed race kids with sensitive skin so finding something that works for them has been a lot of trial and error. This sunscreen goes on so easily, with no white cast at all on their medium brown skin tone! My 5 year old twins and 2 year old don't even complain about having to put it on! A total win, in my book!

    Simple the best

This has been the only sunscreen I've used over the past few years. I happily go through tubes of it in sunny Houston, Texas and whenever I go anywhere else. It's moisturizing without being greasy, stays out of my eyes, and keeps me protected. Please do not change the formula or worse stop making it. I plan to be a loyal customer for decades to come.
