  • A: If I’m understanding your question, no. You would need a grow light to substitute for sunlight. This mat helps seeds germinate by keeping the soil consistently warm.

Limited product life

Bought this heat mat to replace one that I had used for many years. Used this new mat for approximately 4 weeks to start my seeds, in mid March. We unexpectedly needed to use the mat again in late May and discovered it no longer worked. I submitted a ticket to customer service and today I learned it could not be replaced as the 90 day warranty period had passed. I purchased this mat along with many other items to get ready for planting season and to get the items I needed while they were in stock. I’m very disappointed and Burpee has lost me as a customer. Do not buy this mat unless you’re OK with using short term!

This has been working well with every seed starting kit I use even the non-Burpee ones. I recommend this one.

Speeds up sprouting.

I have been using these for several years now and they are great. Last year had dahlia seed up in 5 days, petunias in 7, and marigolds up in 7. I also grow all my tomatoes and peppers using them. I also use grow lights placed close to the trays for extra heat. I have 2 mats and a set of restaurant type shelves with the movable shelves for when they start to get a bit taller. They are worth every penny!
