Q: Does it come with a 43 mm watch band

submitted by Wendy - 4 months ago
  • A: Hi, thanks for reaching out about Garmin Forerunner 165. The Garmin Forerunner 165 does not come with a 43mm watch band. While the watch case itself is 43mm in diameter, the actual band it uses is a 20mm quick-release band. In the watch world, "43mm" refers to the size of the watch face, while the band size is measured by the width of the "lugs" (the gap where the strap attaches). Band Specs for Forerunner 165 Case Size: 43mm Band Width: 20mm Type: Industry-standard "Quick Release" Wrist Fit: Usually fits wrists with a circumference of 126–203mm. If you have any additional questions, we welcome you to contact MyTGTtech at 833-848-8324 every day, between 7am-11pm CST.

Q: Is there any nickel on the wristband or back of the watch face. I am allergic to nickel.

submitted by Melissa - 5 months ago
  • A: Hi, thanks for reaching out about Garmin Forerunner 165. For a person with a severe nickel allergy, the Garmin Forerunner 165 is generally a very safe choice, but there are two small "hot spots" you need to be aware of. 1. The Watch Face & Back (Mostly Safe) The Body: The Forerunner 165 is primarily made of fiber-reinforced polymer (a high-grade plastic). Unlike the Fenix or Venu series, which often have stainless steel or titanium backplates, the back of the Forerunner 165 is plastic. This is excellent for nickel allergy sufferers because most of the watch touching your skin is inert. The Charging Contacts: This is the most common "hidden" source of nickel. There are four small metal circular pins on the back where the charger connects. These are typically plated with a material that can contain trace amounts of nickel or copper. The Sensors: The optical heart rate sensor in the center is covered by glass/plastic and is nickel-free. 2. The Wristband (Potential Risk) The Buckle: The standard silicone strap comes with a stainless steel buckle. Most stainless steel used in watch hardware (like 316L) contains nickel to prevent rusting. While it complies with international "low-release" standards (like the EU REACH regulation), a true nickel allergy can still be triggered by direct contact with the buckle. The Spring Bars: The tiny metal pins that hold the strap to the watch are also stainless steel. My Recommendation for a Reaction-Free Experience If you are highly sensitive, you don't have to return the watch! You can easily "nickel-proof" it with these two steps: Get a Silicone Charging Port Plug: You can buy a pack of tiny silicone "dust plugs" for a few dollars. These pop into the charging port on the back of the watch, creating a physical barrier between those metal pins and your skin. Swap the Strap: Look for a Nylon "hook-and-loop" strap (similar to the Apple Watch Sport Loop). These typically use plastic connectors and no metal buckle at all, meaning zero metal will touch your wrist. The "Nail Polish" Trick: For a quick fix, some people apply a thin layer of clear nail polish to the back of the metal buckle to act as a barrier. Note: If you start to see a rash exactly in the shape of the entire band (not just the buckle), it is likely contact dermatitis from sweat and bacteria trapped under the silicone, rather than a nickel allergy. In that case, switching to a breathable nylon strap is the best fix. If you have any additional questions, we welcome you to contact MyTGTtech at 833-848-8324 every day, between 7am-11pm CST.

Q: Does this model come with music? Can it connect to Spotify for example so I don’t have to bring my phone on a run?

submitted by JSchenk - 7 months ago
  • A: Hi, thanks for reaching out about Garmin Forerunner 165. Yes, this smartwatch can support music from services like Spotify, but you need to make sure you get the specific Garmin Forerunner 165 Music edition. Garmin sells two versions of this watch, a standard version and a "Music" version. Only the Music version allows you to store songs and connect to Spotify so you can leave your phone at home. If you have a Spotify Premium account, the Forerunner 165 Music allows you to: -Sync Playlists: You can download your favorite playlists and podcasts directly to the watch via Wi-Fi. -Offline Playback: Once downloaded, the music is stored on the watch's internal memory (which holds about 500 songs). -Bluetooth Connectivity: You pair your Bluetooth headphones directly to the watch to listen while you run. If you have any additional questions, we welcome you to contact MyTGTtech at 833-848-8324 every day, between 7am-11pm CST.

The hype didn’t do it for me

The forerunner just wasn’t for me - nothing was bad about it. It just felt old and the software archaic - it wasn’t good at syncing to the app and the step counter was either off or waaay behind my other devices. If you want something simple with buttons this is perfect if you don’t care about the tech of the screen resolution. If you do care, then invest in a higher quality garmin with all the functions and you’ll be happier. The battery life is okay - wasn’t blown away by anything it lasted me a good 5 or 6 days depending on the mileage I put on it but I’d wouldn’t go 11 days unless you’re on a long run or walk with now way to charge then I can see it extending itself but it was pretty typical battery life.

Love the customization of activities as needed

I'm pretty pleased with my Forerunner 165. The price point was great for my athletic purposes, which is mostly running, kayaking and sailing. I had wished for specific activities like kayak and sailing, but then I discovered that I can create my own activities with custom displays and gestures etc. for those two missing activities, so my problem was solved easily enough. I replaced an ancient Garmin Vivo 3 watch with a very short battery life. Now I have a watch that runs about a week with full sensors on all the time, which is a nice change. Oh, and I appreciate the sleep summaries, which although not entirely accurate (you need an ECC for that, I think), still provides me insights in my normal sleep cycle, based on pulse, movement and oxygen. So I don't know how to compare this watch with the other models in the Garmin line, but I can say that I'm pleased with this one. Garmin knows how to make good instruments in general. This one was affordable to me.

    Happy Upgrade

I upgraded from my Forerunner 55, which I totally loved, and I’m liking the 165 even better. I wasn’t happy with the 55’s sleep tracking, but I’m feeling a big improvement with the 165, which seems to come closer to how I feel in the morning. Only problem is the waste I’ve generated and taking up space: my old 55.

I was going to get the FENIX 200000, but I started w the 165. I'm a beginner runner. 6 months in - really had never worked out before. For my level - the 165 IS PEEEERRRRFECT. I love it. I'm sure there are other things I could use on the better watches. But for my level. It's spot on.

I've been a FitBit user for over a decade. I didn't know what I was missing. First. The GPS accuracy is sensational. I've used strava in the past but Garmin is just levels above. Second. The sleep data and recovery recs are absolutely crucial now that I've gotten into running. And third. That I get so much data for FREE regarding my runs, pace and heart rate are what make me so pleased with making the switch. The UI took some time getting use to but wowzers am I pleased.

A great upgrade or first watch

I upgraded from the Garmin Forerunner 45 and this was a great choice for not a ton more money. The battery life is significantly better in addition to the interface, touchscreen, sleep statistics, and so much more. Also seems to be a more durable construction so I plan on this watch lasting me quite a while.

    Upgrade

Upgraded from a Forerunner 55. Overall a clear improvement. For me, major positives are more accurate GPS with faster initialization, and more detailed information about e.g. sleep and running mechanics. The clock face is colorful and displays more info, but is sometimes hard to read. Colors and graphs do nothing for me. HR might be more accurate.

Garmin is no joke. This is my 3rd smart watch and by far trumps all others I have used before. Makes the Google Fitbit seem like a joke. The data and insights are scary accurate; body battery feature is cool and gear life among many other features really sets this watch apart. Really pleased with my purchase and the battery life is 9-10 days on average and i am very active so that is great too.
