Use the tips & visuals in this guide to make taking your child's body measurements easy-peasy.

Dont have a fabric tape measure? Use a shoelace or pant leg to measure. Then, lay it flat & use a ruler or tape measure to get a numerical measurement.

How to measure

  • Height

    Have your child stand in front of the fridge.Mark the top of the head with a magnet. Measure a straight line from floor to magnet.

  • Chest

    Have your child make airplane arms. Wrap tape measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping it level & snug.

  • Waist

    With your child bending to one side, measure the point where the waist flexes naturally. Keep the tape level & comfortably loose.

  • Hip

    Have your child stand like a tall tree with feet together. Measure a level line around the fullest part of the hips & seat.

  • Inseam

    Take a pair of pants that fit your child well. Measure along the seam from crotch to leg opening.

    In style shorts that run big

    This pair of shorts is thinner than previous years Cat & Jack shorts, but they are still decent, fashionable shorts. I wish they had normal buttons instead of snap buttons because the snap buttons can eventually wear out. They do run large though so definitely size down a size or two. My daughter can normall wear a XL/XXL pants, but these were too big on the waist. Luckily, you can adjust them. I normally wear a petite xs in women, 5ft and 97lbs, and the XL fit me, but not my daughter who was the intended recipient.

    Way too low-rise for my kid.

    These do not fit my daughter. Not every kid has a tiny/short bum. My kid is more round in the bum and these do not even cover her bottom. Target makes too many mid-rise bottoms and not enough high waisted ones. They're also very short. I have to shop at Old Navy instead.
